Before weighing in the top three reasons why Ruler: Master of the Mask Ep 9-10 is daebak (awesome), let me take my hat off first for this brave father and son.

But most especially, I want to honor the Chief Commandant’s courage, loyalty, and selflessness to the point of sacrificing his own life.

Fellow K-Drama drunkards, here are the top three reasons why Ruler: Master of the Mask Ep 9-10 is spectacular.

1. Commoner Lee Sun, the Pauper
It didn’t even last a whole episode for Commoner Lee Sun to be discovered as an impostor. Ruler: Master of the Mask is definitely not your common switch lives K-Drama where the leads will trade places for half of the show, and learn things from each other’s perspectives.

Pyunsoo-hwe unmasked Commoner Lee Sun right from the start, and Master Dae-mok turned him into his puppet king after believing that the Crown Prince is dead.

2. Queen, the Diva
Okaaaay. This is the part where the show got so unpredictable. During the start of the drama, I’m 100% sure that the Queen is a villain who is conniving with Pyunsoo-hwe, I even tied her to the new born prince’s poisoning. But in Ep 9-10 she seemed to be going the opposite way. She has become the voice of reason by showing her fangs against Master  Dae-mok’s group.

Right now, I’m so confused whether she is an antagonist or a person who will aid the Crown Prince in reclaiming the throne, especially since it looks like she’s aware that the masked king is a fake.

3. Lee Sun, the Royal Peddler
Like what I’ve said above and in previous episodes, Ruler: Master of the Mask has its own timeline and does not follow the flow of other saeguks. I commend the unpredictability of the story and the characters themselves.

After the King’s plan with Commoner Lee Sun back fired and with the Crown Prince escaping the kingdom, I thought Master Woo Bo will take the orphaned prince under his wings and train him to be a great king. This is what it’s supposed to be, right? I mean, most saeguks play it this way. Wrong, Master Woo Bo may have nursed the Crown Prince but he did not spoon feed him the steps on how to be a noble ruler. Instead, he sent him to be a peddler to learn the importance of organization, loyalty and hard work on his own.

I appreciate how PDnim deviated from the common story line of K-Drama trade lives. Instead of making the Crown Prince live the life of a commoner and see things from his subject’s point of view, he made him into a self-made man who learned the ropes of the world on his own. PDnim gave him the chance to explore more things and gain knowledge far from the palace.

Between Love and Obsession

Win a date with tad hamilton
If my memory serves me right, I think it was from the Hollywood film Win a Date with Tad Hamilton where I picked up the thing about big love and great love. It says that big love is the kind that you forget in two years while great love is the type that changes your life. This idea made me constantly consider that most second leads in K-Dramas are the ones who consider the main girl/boy as their great love, including Hwa-gun.

Me and my favorite dongsaeng (shout out to Maknae Ahjumma) were hashing it out how Hwa-gun has more screen time than Ga-eun, and I told her that I like Hwa-gun in the sense that she’s always there to help the Crown Prince. Like when she made him drink a poison to hide his pulse from Master Dae-mok, she’s one of the reasons why he’s still alive.

She even gained Gon’s loyalty to the point that he killed Pyunsoo-hwe soldiers to save the Crown Prince.

My friend argued that it’s not love, it’s mere obsession. It got me thinking and I dove into an ocean of thoughts on the line separating love and obsession. But at the end of the day, I’d like to believe that the Crown Prince is Hwa-gun’s great love, the person who brought out the good in her.

Ruler Master of the Mask Kko Mool Go nahee

Little Kko-mool (Go Na-hee), Commoner Lee-sun’s younger sister, reminds me of the young Kim Yoo-jung, the two both debuted at 4 years old. Na-hee first appeared on SBS My Mother is a Daughter in Law.

I know Lovelyz Kei has a sweet voice but I was a bit surprised that it suits an OST. I encourage you to listen to Star and Sun, it will surely pull your heartstrings with it’s sweet melody and emotional lyrics.

See you on the next episode to find out if Crown Prince and Ga-eun will cross paths again. Annyeong!
